It is always my goal to prevent tooth loss, but sometimes, disease and decay are so advanced that an extraction is unavoidable. When that is the case, discussing replacement options is necessary. Most people are aware that dentures and bridges are an option, but what if I told you there was a better solution — one that would look natural and allow you to enjoy your life just as you did prior to your tooth loss? What is it and how can you possibly benefit from tooth replacement?
Dental Implants 101
Dental implants are surgically placed threaded posts that mimic the function of tooth roots. Once the jaw and gums have healed, a natural-looking prosthetic tooth is permanently attached to the implant via an abutment piece. The new “tooth” not only looks real, it functions just like a natural tooth, as well.
The Benefits
While there are certainly other replacement options, I always suggest implants to my patients. Why? Here are just a few benefits they offer:
- They are permanent and last for years! They’re firmly planted in your jaw, just like the teeth you were born with.
- They allow you to eat what you want. Unlike dentures and bridges, which come with a long list of foods that you cannot eat, implants allow you to eat your favorite foods. From corn on the cob to carne milanesa, your teeth can handle it all.
- They are easy to care for. Simply brush, floss, and follow through with your dental examinations.
- They restore confidence. If you’re preoccupied with what people think of your smile, you’re not enjoying life to its fullest. Having a mouth full of teeth makes it easier to share your smile with the world and makes you feel better about the way you look.
